Learning from Seedbed
2003
The installation restages Vito Acconci’s “Seedbed” work by articulating the ramp as the main character. The ramp is replayed though inverted from the original Acconci work, so rather than conceal a hidden body this ramp opens out onto the space of the gallery, inviting visitors to enter its interior, as a social space. In addition, four microphones are mounted onto the ramp and connected to two speakers placed in the gallery space. The volume is turned up to create a steady feedback hum; the feedback can be modulated and played by walking on the ramp, tapping on it, etc. In this way, the ramp functions as a resonant instrument performed by visitors.
Exhibited at Standard Gallery, Chicago.
